AOL Cancels My AIM Account

Way back before broadband was everywhere, I was an AOL subscriber. When I got broadband I cancelled AOL, that was back in early 2000. Just today, my cancellation finally went through. At least that’s the reason I was given as to why my AIM account was cancelled. When I called, they tried to get me to sign up for their paid services, after I declined they gave me the option to continue my free service.

So what the heck was that all about? Did they just want me to call them so they can pitch me their services? Is this a sign of things to come? Maybe I should start looking for an alternative. I hear Facebook chat is pretty popular.

FYI: If your not familiar, when you cancel your paid AOL account, AOL gives you the option to remain an AOL “customer” as an AIM user. That’s the route I chose and I’ve been happily using AIM since.
